Racquet-Thon 5 May
The day dawned fine and sunny so we were lucky after all the rain the previous week which meant delaying the opening of the new artificial clay courts. Lots of members turned out with kids and friends and, after a bit of a chaotic start – we are all novices at this – the day went swimmingly! Thank goodness for Richard and the hard work that Margaret and John had put in the night before. Elie was thrown in at the deep end and ran the table tennis with aplomb. We allotted 40 minutes per event and it was great fun to see people having a go at sports that were new to them. Carpet Bowls run by Steve Johnson was a particular success with a play-off in the ladies between Teresa Hobbs and Carol Blackburn, Teresa winning by a whisker and the men between John Fuller and James Coll – young James being the victor.
The overall joint winners of the day were Jack Matthews (particularly brilliant as he was playing adults a lot of the time) and Mark Braden, who both won a bottle of wine - Stephen, Jack’s Dad, seemed happy! - with Jack also winning the junior section and Chris Sales coming a close second. Well done to all of them.
Nice lunchtime food and cakes by Nan and later a BBQ by Tony ensured that we were all well fed and watered and a great time was had by all.
