Open Day 28 June

Open Day report.

Our second Open Day of the year took place on 28th June.  Again, the atmosphere was really good, aided hugely by Steve Johnson’s Adult and Junior Tournament which provided great entertainment for the rest of us to watch.  Steve set up the tournament and devised the format and bought a smashing cup.  He even provided four pots of red geraniums a la Wimbledon between courts 1-3 and he had a word with the powers that be and the weather was superb!  Six pairs took part, Norman O’Regan stepping in to fill the gap left by Adrian Toothe who had got injured in the morning.  Norman played with Matt Doran, who looked very cool in long smart navy shorts and did some spectacular somersaults in chasing the ball!  John Bland, never one to disappoint in the fashion stakes,  looked very fetching in shocking pink T shirt and very short shorts!  John played with Chris Ennis who did some very good volleys.  Mark Braden and Josh Carty made a good pair as did Graham Ralph and Aidan Spinks giving all their opponents a good run for their money.  Norman Jones said the juniors were a whole lot better than the adults!  There was a very exciting play-off between Paul Everett and Philip O’Regan playing Steve Whitlock and James Everett as both teams had scored the same.  Father and son faced each other on opposite sides of the net and, after a very good match, Paul and Philip, who played extremely well, were the winners.  Mariska presented the cup and echoed all our thoughts when she thanked Steve and said we would look forward to next year’s event.

Richard , Jake and John provided their usual excellent coaching.  It is delightful to see how good they all are with the juniors.  Good news on the new members front. We got 8 tennis and squash juniors, 5 non-playing social members, 9 tennis members and 2 tennis and squash members.

The clothes rail with Sundridge Park logos organised by Phil Ashton and Vince Grima went really well and they took quite a few orders.  If anyone would like to order one of these tops they can do so through Phil Ashton.

Steve and Susan Spinks provided a very tasty BBQ and nice cakes were provided by obliging ladies.

Thank you to everyone who helped on the day.
