The last August Bank Holiday dawned dull and grey for the Field Cup Tournament at Sundridge.  However, there was nothing dull and grey about the atmosphere!  We had 32 entrants including new members Sarah and Nick Bruce and many of our hot juniors including Jenny Jarnot and Alice Handy.  All the juniors played extremely well and really entered into the spirit of the tournament in sporting fashion.  I was a bit thrown in one game with 3 very useful boys on court, Philip, Matt and Sam, Sam having to double as a girl as we were short of women.   

Margaret and John Bland deserve huge thanks for arranging the tournament with their usual dedicated efficiency – not everybody would want to take this on and we do appreciate it.  We were treated to delicious cakes from our new fairy grandmother, Nan (congratulations!) and, for those that stayed on or came later, the usual excellent BBQ cooked by Tony O’Brien.

The Field Cup winner was Sue Paton who narrowly beat Max Brown – Sue having the great advantage of winning her first game 7-0 with Chris Ennis.  Max was the winner of the bottle of wine, achieving most points for the men and our newcomer, Sarah Bruce won a box of chocolates for achieving the least points, but she did it with terrific grace and style and watch out for next time because now she knows the ropes!

These afternoons are a great way to mix with members of all ages and for new members to meet everyone.  Look out for the next one.
