Squash Chairmans Update
Well, what a great 2008 it's been ! The Club Centenary celebrations were a resounding success - in particular the Marquee ball and the appearance, seemingly everywhere, of the Club Centenary shirts, the last stages of the refurbishment of the changing rooms were completed and the First Team dipped it's toe into the rather chilly waters of Priory Division 1 !
Eddie Thompson Christmas Squash Doubles Tournament made a welcome return to the club and the opportunity was taken to honour the sad passing away of one of the club's very popular long standing members. The plaque to Court Two- now renamed the Brian Booth Court - being unveiled before the Doubles Tournament.
The Club started it's association with Peter Nicols Squash in 2008 - Peter, an Iconic Squash Great enthusiastically hosting a coaching session and exhibition match in the summer.Due to the association club members are able to obtain Prince squash rackets and shoes at great discounted prices !
The maintenance of the Courts continue unabated - always seems to be plenty to do - the lighting has been attended to thanks to George and Laurence, the heating sensors have proved successful and external work will continue in 2009 thanks to club members working parties - for those who think that these are hard work look at Phil's update on the refurbishment and the last working party !
Membership continues to be healthy, the leagues are consistently popular ( regularly updated thanks to Ben ) as is Doubles and Racketball - with a league starting later in January. A Membership Drive has started and at the equivalent of £10 a month including court time until the end of March, it's an absolute steal ! The new members gained in 2008 have proved to be really active and sociable, playing in leagues, team games and friendlies. Also a fair proportion are lady members - a special welcome to you all!
So, the club continues to go from strength to strength!
The First and Second team under the elusive and indeed somewhat reclusive management of Ben the team manager continue to do well...... and sometimes not so well.......but all victories and mishaps are faithfully reported in Phil's inimitable fashion in the Squash newsletter and on the website. Nan continues to produce marvellous food, Steve's barbecues are brilliant and SPARKS, the Charity for Kids in Need, continues to benefit from our social and sports events.
And looking to the future? La Rochelle team are visiting at the end of January trying to seek revenge for the trashing they suffered in 2007 - Ne Panic Pas Mes Amis ! The Club will attend the Canary Wharf Squash Classic in March , and as happened last year, will admire and enjoy seeing and meeting top quality and really friendly players. The Squash Honours Board has been updated, the Club having eventually found a local signwriter, Tournaments will be arranged as usual, Social events promise to be plentiful and well attended as always and The Club continues to be lively, really sociable and friendly. As it has often been said, with it's setting in over 6 acres of very attractive grounds truly A Green Oasis in a Concrete Jungle !
Finally, a really big Thank You to the hard working and enthusiastic members of the Squash Committee and as always to our sponsors: the Raj Moni for tournament sponsorship, Thackray & Williams for very kindly sponsoring the Club Honours Board, Garth Lockner for arranging sponsorship of the Team squash strips in 2008.
Here's to a really brilliant and successful 2009!
Wishing you all the best.
