Xmas Doubles

EDDIE THOMPSON XMAS DOUBLES Dec 08

‘Chaos theory- bit different from Chaos', I explained to our beloved and revered Squash Chairman, ‘discovered by Lorenz, a meteorologist in about 1960, finding underlying order in apparently random data'. ‘That's the butterfly flapping its wings theory isn't it? ,'said VtP, ‘causing unforeseen consequences elsewhere in the world'. ‘Yep', I said, ‘bit like Precious in Costa Rica slowly and sensuously stepping out of her evening dress ........' ‘and Ginger Nuts winning a game of squash ...,' we said in unison. How we laughed, tears streaming down our cheeks at the ridiculous idea of Ginger Nuts actually winning a game !

‘And Chaos ?', asked our beloved and revered Squash Chairman, always eager to learn, ‘Characterised by complete disorganisation, lack of planning, no end game , headless chicken syndrome', I explained.

‘Bit like Eddie Thompson's Xmas Doubles then? ‘ commented VtP. ‘ Absolutely', I replied, pleased that VtP had understood so quickly. ‘ You know, always thought that it was doomed from the outset, think about it ....CHAOS ! Conrad Helping Andrew Organise Something........' and having waited for some little time until our beloved and revered Squash Chairman's cogs had slowly churned and worked out the acronym , how we both laughed.....' Chaos ,... phil.......Conrad helping Andrew........Oh that's so funnny...!' , he exclaimed as tears rolled down our cheeks.....

But, to be fair it was, despite some organisational hiccups a great fun evening with about 18 of us turning up, SPARKS charity benefiting from the occasion, pleas chat over Nan's Thai curry and copious quantities of refreshing ale being sunk. As Andrew ‘AC' Raby eventually admitted, several weeks after the event - ‘Thought there was nothing to it, phil...just let people know of the event, then wait for them to pitch up and play a bit of doubles.......didn't realise we had to tell them what the format was......or make sure they turned up......' Well, AC , I thought, it would've been helpful if you'd at least told them whether it was the best of five or three games, rather than leaving it to their discretion.... Especially with fine wine prizes at stake courtesy of the ageing icon Eddie ‘Big Nose ‘ Thompson who presided over proceedings with his usual aplomb.

So, all in all a thoroughly enjoyable event and made even more memorable by the inauguration of the Brian Booth Court with a few impromptu heartfelt and well chosen words by our beloved and revered Squash Chairman.

Can't wait for the next Xmas Doubles really ! ...if only to have another laugh at Conrad and Andrew‘s organisational efforts !

Phil
