Winter Tennis Tournament
Report on Winter tennis finals - Sunday 21 March
Blessed with good weather and some enthusiastic support, this years winter finals got off to a flying start.
The first two matches to enter the lions den were between Jo and Megan Robinson v Penny Ypma and Anna Wilson ( Ladies H/C Doubles), Matt Doran and Ricky Gordon v Paul and James Everett ( Mens H/C Doubles). Both matches were hotly contested with eventual wins for Jo and Megan and Ricky and Matt. Shot of the finals must go to Matt, with his cross court, through the legs clean winner!
After a short break there followed the Mixed H/C Doubles ( Sue Long and Dave Davies v Jo Robinson and Matt Doran) This one went the distance with a Champions tie break finally going in favour of Jo and Matt. On another court the Mens Open Singles featured James Everett v Henry Whyte with James winning out in straight sets.
Later in the day came the final final, the Adult/Junior pairings of Jo and Ben Robinson v Bill and Maclaren Crawford with the spoils of victory going the way of Mac and Bill. Asked about her accomplishment in reaching three finals, Jo put it down to early nights and abstention from any form of alcohol!
All matches were consumately overseen by a splendid selection of umpires, including Matt Doran, Dick Ward., Elie Dahdi and a couple of stalwarts, Bill Cole and David Powell. Dick is to be commended on requiring only one pint during his supervisory role.
As is always the case, thanks have to go to those behind the scenes who make these events possible, including Fiona Kelly, Anna Wilson, Nan Casey, John Chappell behind the bar, Sarah Thompson and her glorious cakes, and Steve Johnson.

After all the excitement and expenditure of energy during the day, it was nice to relax and enjoy the not inconsiderable talent of Salvatore De Concilis. We were treated to a fine selection of different musical genres complete with vocals. The event was a sell out, the wine flowed and a few brave souls ventured on to the dance floor.
