Second Team in Dogfight to avoid Relegation.

‘Well’ said nbm (newbestmate) Neill, after the match…..’Bit Touch and Go that one , Phil’. ‘ Judging by Pascal’s play it was more like No Touch and All Gone ‘, I replied – How we laughed !.... So, despite Pascal giving a masterclass in how to tin the ball with minimum effort and consummate ease, how did the rest of the team fare in what had been billed earlier as a Must Win Double Pointer Relegation Special…….?

‘You know, Neil’, I’d said earlier, ‘bit crucial this one…   possible 40 points on offer as previous match cancelled, Seconds are third from bottom so could be relegated or even shoot up from one end of the table to the other.’…. ‘Ben playing ? ‘, Neil had asked, ‘ No mate…… Non Playing Skip’…....and then, great minds thinking alike, we’d said, in unison,  ‘Well, reckon Seconds may have a real chance then’……… How we laughed !..

Wiping tears of mirth from our eyes we went along as loyal supporters to take up our positions in the Gallery and hear about earlier matches – Wiggy won…playing well at no 4.!! .as he should….good game, severe haircut though. Bit of a setback though for

Rich - seemingly  not too clear about the object of Team Play and content just to keep the rallies going rather than going for the kill. Rich lost…

Garff to the fore against an anorexic 7ft beanpole in comparison to whom Garfff looked positively portly. But, playing controlled line and length, with awesome power and impressive court coverage Garffff stuck to his guns and came off a well deserved 3-0 winner. An immense performance we thought……So Sparks 2-1 up with Boothy and Pascal to play….neither having the best of records, Boothy having had an injury ravaged season and questions really having to be raised over Pas’s new fashion trend of a bra strap holding flowing locks in place …What Was That All About ???

And so, onto the game of the night - with the team score 2-1 to Sundridge…..

Boothy outclassing his opponent and playing only as Boothy can…..Actually Winning…..without getting injured …..which for the Wannabe Surfer Dude was quite an achievement….winning the match and making Sparks safe from relegation !

And then Pascal’s final game  - a dead rubber -  or as we said later ‘ Certainly one to be erased from the memory !’ and so the Seconds ran out worthy 3-2 winners, avoided relegation and later in the clubhouse beer and pleas chat flowed, Fat Chef Mark’s nosh was scoffed and a great night was had by all !

Congrats Seconds – Onto Next Season !

First team gain promotion to Premier Division.

The Firsts, in contrast, had an extremely successful season and have been promoted to the first division- an even more awesome result as this is the first time in living memory…well anyway, for many years…that a representative club team has played at this level!

As Justin, team skip, said later ‘We owe it all really, Phil, to the loyal supporters, The Fat Chef, Chairman Vin for sorting out the showers, and a truly great bunch of committed and talented players’.

We’ll second that, Justin – a truly great performance under your inspired leadership!
