The Squash Committee
Squash members views are made known to the Main Club Committee through the Squash Committee, a friendly bunch of people whose responsibilities include the court maintenance programme, social events, new members, tournaments, league and club teams.
Vin's Views.... (a word from our Chairman)
It must be four or even five years now since Ken Anderson stepped down as Chairman of SPARKS and that’s a long, long, time for the Squash section to be without someone at the helm. So, although the Squash Committee has done a great job in keeping things ticking over, in order to move forward, clear direction, leadership and a sense of purpose is required.
Bob Wilson’s appointment as the overall Club Chairman marks the beginning of a new era for the Club, an opportunity to create a great club atmosphere, where both tennis and squash sections can excel, socialize and work together to make the club successful. We, as club members, need to:
- Involve ourselves in club renovation projects
- Move squash forward to the next level
- Fully participate in social functions
- Retain and then increase our membership numbers
There are several areas that need looking at and my first concern is squash membership which has fallen by 15-20% over the last couple of years to about 82 members. Whilst this makes it easy to get a court it’s not really the basis for a successful squash section and we need to make sure that the basic club facilities – changing rooms, showers, bar area - are improved, and that the squash facilities are maintained to a good playing standard equal to, if not better than, that of clubs in the area.
As a member of the club for over 5 years and now your Chairman I am committed and determined, with your input and help, to work towards a successful squash recovery whilst maintaining a strong approach and commitment to the high standards of squash which are fundamental to SPARK’s heritage.
